No. 58,  The Joyous/ Lake:

“The Joyous. Success.
Perseverance is favorable.”

The Image is of  "Lakes resting one on the other. . .Thus the superior man joins with his friends for discussion and practice."

A balanced relationship and mutual support is what the I Ching is talking about in this future message--- echoing yesterday's changing line "If one clings to the little boy, one loses the strong man."

"Dealing with people, one should be gentle and joyful but not flattering and fawning.  Dealing with events, one should be firm and stable but not stubborn and opinionated."  [Huang]
"Joy's greatest quality is the encouragement it affords people." [Blofeld]

"Strive to create accord within your society by encouraging others in pursuit of their individual goals." [Wing]

This approach could be your key to a truly Joyous holiday season.

"You are forced to make a choice."

No. 17,  Following / Adaptability,  Line 2:

"If one clings to the little boy,
One loses the strong man."

You will need to "follow" or "adapt to" those around you, as explained in the main message, BUT  . . .  if you follow or adapt to
that which is weak or inferior, you will lose that which is beneficial.

Do you enable --- or even encourage --- childish qualities?   Indulging yourself or others is not the way to build the strong Following you will need to accomplish your goals.

You will not be able to have it both ways.  "You are forced to make a choice." [Wing]

The I Ching's message on how you should Adapt is straightforward:  Be the grown-up.

Tomorrow:  "The superior man joins with his friends  . . ."

" . . . one must first know how to adapt oneself."

No. 17,  Following / Adaptability:

"Following has supreme success.
Perseverance furthers.  No blame."

"In order to obtain a following one must first know how to adapt oneself."  [Wilhelm]

You have something you want to accomplish.  You can't do it by yourself.  You will need to develop a following - people who will endorse and support your actions.

"Rid yourself of old prejudices and opinions that may be controlling your behavior and holding you back.  If your goals and principles are not consonant with those of your society, then you must make an adjustment in yourself." [Wing]

There is "no blame" in following this course now.  In fact, it will bring you "supreme success."

What life circumstance is the I Ching urging you to adapt to?

The rocks in life are not going to move  . . .

No. 39,   Obstruction:

"Obstruction. The southwest furthers.
The northeast does not further.
It furthers one to see the great man.
Perseverance brings good fortune."

In the future of The Well, the water from the source begins its journey.

Like water flowing down a mountain --- the image of this hexagram --- you will encounter many "rocks" along the way.  The I Ching's message:  These obstacles are a natural part of the path you have chosen. You must learn to deal with them in a natural way.

"When flowing water, the image of the tao, meets with an obstacle in its path, a blockage in its journey, it pauses.  It increases in volume and strength, filling up in front of the obstacle and eventually spilling past it." [Wing]

"An obstruction that lasts only for a time is useful for self-development.  This is the value of adversity." [Wilhelm]

The "rocks" in life are not going to move.  Focus your thinking on what you need to do flow around them.

" . . . telling the future is not its purpose"

No. 48,  The Well,  Line 2:

"At the wellhole one shoots fishes.
The jug is broken and leaks."

This line suggests you have superior qualities and talents, but are neglecting them.  "The water itself is clear, but it is not being used." [Wilhelm]

"It can also be informing a person who is using the I Ching for divination that telling the future is not its purpose.  Its purpose is to help him correct those attitudes that are negatively influencing his future . . ." [Anthony & Moog]

There is clear water in your Well, sufficient to sustain you in your Creative path in a new direction.

What can you do to mend your "jug" and bring the clear water of your truest self to the surface?

Tomorrow:  ". . . a time useful for self-development."

The truth of each life is there, unchanging  . . .

No. 48,  The Well:

“The Well.  The town may be changed,
But the well cannot be changed.
It neither decreases nor increases.
They come and go and draw from the well.
If one gets down almost to the water
And the rope does not go all the way,
Or the jug breaks, it brings misfortune."

The Well is the Yi's reminder that surface circumstances may change, but the truth of each life is there, unchanging.

"The Well represents the I Ching as a source of universal truth and nourishment.  Its water is available to all who come to it.  Sometimes, however, we look for the wrong things --- seeking to reinforce inferior ideas --- or our effort is tentative --- we don't lower our rope down far enough." [Anthony]

To find what will last, you will have to lower your bucket all the way down.  Don't just skim the surface.

And take time and care drawing the wisdom out.  Grabbing for a quick-fix answer will bring misfortune, especially since . . .

Tomorrow:  "The jug is broken and leaks."

Do something visible and substantial  . . .

No. 50.  The Ding / The Cauldron / Establishing the New:

"The Ding.  Supreme good fortune.
Success."

This future message echoes yesterday's changing line: "Get real."  A Creative new direction is open to you, but it needs to be grounded and shaped by reality.

"You will begin to perceive what is actually possible for you to achieve and not waste precious energies on the impossible, those things that are not in accord with the Cosmic Order given the circumstances of your life." [R.L. Wing]

"When a new dynasty began or a new emperor was enthroned, the first thing done was to cast a new ding (ting) and inscribe the new constitution on it, symbolizing that a new era had begun." [Huang] The new ruler then used this ding (large bronze cauldron) to prepare sacrificial offerings.

We received this hexagram from the I Ching on Nov. 11.  Receiving it again as the future of Inexperience suggests that you need to sharpen your focus on your new direction.

Do something visible and substantial to show yourself --- and others --- that you are Establishing the New

The Yi says "Get real."

No. 4,  Youthful Folly  /  Inexperience  /  Childhood,  Line 4:

"Entangled folly brings humiliation."

The I Ching says:  "Get real."

"For youthful folly it is the most hopeless thing to entangle itself in empty imaginings.  The more obstinately it clings to such unreal fantasies, the more certainly will humiliation overtake it."  [Wilhelm]

You may be  a "child" in the Creative new direction you are taking, but that doesn't mean you can ignore reality.  "This line may be taken as a warning against a too idealistic or visionary attitude." [Blofeld]

And don't buy into the schemes or fantasies of others.  You are meant to be open and willing to learn --- not gullible.

In this way, in the future . . .

Tomorrow:  "You will begin to perceive what is actually possible . . ."

Wealthy?  Or handsome?

No. 4,  Youthful Folly  /  Inexperience  /  Childhood, Line 3:

"Take not a maiden who, when she sees a man of bronze,
Loses possession of herself.
Nothing furthers."

You are at the beginning of a learning curve, so mistakes are to be expected, but the I Ching says:  Not all Youthful Follies will be harmless.

Blofeld translates "a man of bronze" as a "a man of wealth."  Huang says it means "handsome man."  Ladies, whatever has tripped your trigger --- rich or handsome --- don't make a fool of yourself in the pursuit.

Gentlemen, are you an "inexperienced man, struggling to rise?"  The danger here is that he "easily loses his own individuality when he slavishly imitates a strong personality of higher station." [Wilhelm]

Man or woman, this is not a time to throw yourself after that which you desire. "Nothing furthers" from this approach.  Learn and progress with dignity and self-possession.

         A second pitfall remains  . . .

Tomorrow:  "Entangled folly brings humiliation."

"Immaturity.  Good fortune!"

No. 4,  Youthful Folly  /  Inexperience  /  Childhood:

"Youthful folly has success.
It is not I who seek the young fool;
The young fool seeks me.
At first I inform him.
If he asks two or three times, it is importunity.
If he importunes, I give him no information.
Perseverance furthers."

You are Inexperienced --- as in Childhood --- in the direction you are now taking.    As Blofeld translates it:  "Immaturity.  Good fortune!"

Good fortune, because --- with the Creative force of the universe behind you --- you are free to learn as a child would.

This hexagram also advises those new to the I Ching on how best to approach the oracle:  with modesty, respect and an open mind.

Most common problem:  mentally arguing with the Yi because you don't understand the answer, or the answer is not what you want to hear.  The Yi says:  Patience, Grasshopper, patience.
          Two potential pitfalls await . . .

" . . . the temptation to leave our path intrudes . . ."

No. 44,   Coming to Meet  /  Temptation:

"Coming to meet.  The influence is powerful.
One should not join with such an influence."

The main message was that we are in a very positive time . . . a time when The Creative  is the dominant force, a time "exceptional in terms of inspiration, energy and will."  [Wing]  Our single changing line cautioned, however, that this is the very beginning of the beginning.

This future message says:  It is at just such a time the "temptation to leave our path intrudes, either in reaction to the inferior nature of others, or because of internal pressure of our own desires.  It is important to acknowledge this danger." [Anthony]

"This may manifest most often in political affairs, for it is here that temptations pose the greatest threat. . . . Confront issues that seem inferior and encounter publicly persons who represent deficient ideals.  Your words will have impact now." [Wing]

The I Ching says:  The energy of the Universe is with you and your Creative endeavors.  Don't let others pressure you back into old patterns.  Don't allow the desire for quick or easy success cause you to leave the path of The Gentle, Penetrating Wind (the last main message).

"In your dealings with others, practice modesty, Independence, and patience.  . . . withdraw if you cannot meet another in a balanced and independent way." [Walker]

Hidden dragon  . . .

No. 1,  The Creative,  Line 1:

"Hidden dragon.  Do not act."

You are at the beginning of the beginning --- the first stage of The Creative process.  The power of the dragon, the "electrically charged, dynamic, arousing force" ---  is still hidden underground. [Wilhelm]

In explaining the significance of this line, Huang relates the story of King Wen, who studied and arranged hexagrams of the I Ching during his seven years of imprisonment by the Tyrant of Shang:  "He realized that every undertaking or revolutionary cause needed to pass through the four stages of yuan, heng, li, and zhen, or sprouting, growing, blooming, and bearing fruit."

"When the time and situation are not suitable for one to move, one should have patience.  On the other hand, when the time and circumstances are favorable for one to advance, one should not lose the opportunity.  This is what the ancient sage meant: following the way of Nature."  [Huang]

Right now, have patience. But continue your Creative process with resolve.  The future holds  . . .

" the primal directive that propels us into our destinies"

No.
1,  The Creative:

"The Creative works sublime success,
Furthering through perseverance."

"The time is exceptional in terms of inspiration, energy and will. . . .   The force of this time is the primal directive that propels us into our destinies, regardless of what our reasoning or recalcitrant minds may think." [R.L. Wing]

.  You may know exactly what Creative actions you want to take  . . . but more likely, your Creativity has been languishing in the background, pushed aside while you deal with the necessities of life.

This is a message from the I Ching : Now is the time for your Creativity to come first. But the Yi has also informed us, in yesterday's message, which governs the indefinite future, that success will come through "what is small," and that our efforts need to proceed "consistently in the same direction."

To harmonize these two directives, I recommend to you The Artist's Way; A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity, by Julia Cameron. Following her 12-week course will guide you, step by step, in plugging in to your own "Spiritual Electricity."

What?  You'd prefer the Big Bang Theory of Creativity . . . a big explosion. . . right now?   The Yi offers one note of caution  . . .

We move into a time  . . .

No. 57,  The Gentle  /  Penetrating Influence:
"The Gentle.  Success through what is small.
It furthers one to have somewhere to go.
It furthers one to see the great man."

We move into a time where a Gentle, Penetrating Influence will be most important.   Success will be obtained "through what is small."

Huang calls this hexagram Proceeding Humbly. We received this message without changing lines, indicating that its advice should govern our actions for the indefinite future.  It is also a continuation of our last main message, Modesty/Moderation.

"The wind that changes direction often, even a powerful one, will disperse nothing; it only stirs things up.  The wind that causes real change is the one that blows consistently in the same direction." [Walker]  For a movement like Occupy Wall Street, for example, this may signal that the usefulness of grand gestures has passed, and that a form of steady pressure in the desired direction needs to develop.

What are you trying to change?  Whether it is yourself, or others, or the entire financial system, it will require steady, unceasing, Penetrating Influence in a single direction.

The heart thinks constantly . . .

No. 52,  Keeping Still / Mountain:

"Keeping Still. Keeping his back still
So that he no longer feels his body.
He goes into his courtyard
And does not see his people.
No blame."

In the future of Modesty/Moderation, the I Ching says:  Give yourself a break"Because of the external complexities in worldly matters, it is of great importance to achieve an inner peace which will allow you to act in harmony with the times  . . ." [Wing]

The Image explains:  "Thus the superior man does not permit his thoughts to go beyond his situation."

That's the key to Keeping Still: Let go of worrying about what has happened, or what may happen.  As Ram Dass would say, "Be here now."

"The heart thinks constantly. This cannot be changed, but the movements of the heart --- that is, a man's thoughts --- should restrict themselves to the immediate situation. All thinking that goes beyond this only makes the heart sore."  [Wilhelm]

Are you surrounded by people clamoring for attention?  There is "no blame" in tuning them out right now.

" . . . chastise one's own city and one's country."

No. 15,  Modesty  /  Moderation,  Line 6:

"Modesty that comes to expression.
It is favorable to set armies marching
To chastise one's own city and one's country."

"This line can refer to a person who believes that modesty means self-denial and acceptance of incorrect treatment by others." [Anthony & Moog]

The Yi says:  No.  That's incorrect.

"The truly modest person stands up for his self-worth.  Sometimes this requires both an outer and the inner No.  It is a 'No, I do not accept being treated incorrectly,' or 'No, I do not accept being poor,' . . . " [Anthony & Moog]

As  Wilhelm explains The Image, "  . . . the superior man equalizes the extremes that are the source of social discontent . . . "  This line tells us:  Some real action must be taken to accomplish this.  Deeds must match words.

In fact, it is favorable to "set armies marching" to bring your city and your country back to Moderation.

Forces in the cosmos are balancing extremes

No. 15,   Modesty / Moderation:

"Modesty creates success.
The superior man carries things through."

"Thus the superior man reduces that which is too much, and augments that which is too little. He weighs things and makes them equal." [The Image]

"The predominant forces in the cosmos at this time are in the process of balancing extremes and harmonizing interests. This tendency toward equilibrium and Moderation is a natural urge in the Universe. . . . Nature balances itself with plagues, droughts, and cycles of overabundance, and human nature strives toward Moderation in its tendency to reduce the excesses of the overpowerful and to augment the needs of those who are desperately wanting." [Wing]

Wilhelm points out the parallels to be found in the Bible: "Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough place plain." [Isa. 40:4] ; "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble." [Jas. 4:6]

"It must be understood that acting with Moderation means not only limiting the obvious excesses, but also exposing yourself to new areas of experience." [Wing]  This echoes our last main message, Establishing the New.

In what area of your life do you need to act with this kind of Moderation?

The Vatican joins the Yi in Occupy Wall Street?

No. 44,   Coming to Meet  /  Temptation:

"Coming to meet.  The influence is powerful.
One should not join with such an influence."

"It is a dangerous hour.  Through an eruption of our inferior nature, darkness has interrupted the flow of light." [Walker]

"The temptation to leave our path intrudes, either in reaction to the inferior nature of others, or because of internal pressure of our own desires." [Anthony]

"Supreme good fortune" was forecast in the I Ching's main message, Establishing the New. Our single changing line said this new era has "superior worth," but warned of  "the temptation of looking to other beliefs."

“We should not be afraid to propose new ideas, even if they might destabilize pre-existing balances of power that prevail over the weakest.  They are a seed thrown to the ground that will sprout and hurry towards bearing fruit.”   From  the "Note on Financial Reform"  issued by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace on Oct. 24, 2011.

Keep your mind empty of fixed beliefs

No. 50,   The Ding  /  The Cauldron  /  Establishing the New,  Line 5:

"The ding has yellow handles, golden carrying rings.
Perseverance furthers."

So --- you have crafted your sacrificial vessel, marking  the beginning of a new era.  Your ding (often translated as ting) has handles of gold --- superior worth.

"The 'golden carrying rings' symbolize the real value that accrues when a person has cleaned out the ting (here a metaphor for his  . . . mind) of preconceived beliefs.    . . .  'Perseverance furthers is a message to say the inner No to the temptation of looking to other beliefs of an opposite nature, after having discarded inappropriate beliefs.

"The handles that make the ring portable are a metaphor for the flexibility of Cosmic Truth to apply to every situation.  This flexibility is maintained only when a person keeps his mind empty of all fixed beliefs."  [Anthony & Moog]

This "temptation" is the greatest danger to your "supreme good fortune, and it continues into the future . . .

A new Era has begun  . . .

No.
50,  The Ding /  The Cauldron /  Establishing the New:

"The Ding.  Supreme good fortune.
Success."

(Artists and craftsmen of the Occupy Wall Street movement, see note below.)

In order for you to truly Establish the New, and obtain "supreme good fortune,"  it will be necessary to make a sacrifice:  "Earthly values" must be sacrificed to "the divine."  [Wilhelm]

"You will begin to perceive what is actually possible for you to achieve and not waste precious energies on the impossible, those things that are not in accord with the Cosmic Order given the circumstances of your life." [R.L. Wing]

Is there something that you are clinging to --- a hope, a dream, a goal --- that is just not attainable?  Sacrificing that unrealistic goal will allow you to establish a new, richer life.

This marks a new --- and lasting --- era of "supreme good fortune."

Tomorrow:  "There is firm substance in the central."
..............................................

*To Artists and Craftsmen of Occupy Wall Street:  It's probably not possible for you to cast a sacrificial vessel in bronze, but you could create your own ding, from whatever material seems appropriate.  Like the dings of old, it can be "decorated with sacred inscriptions and auspicious pictures of birds and animals." [Huang]  Inspire us (the 99%) with a symbol that the new era has begun.

" . . . encourage people to approach  . . . "

No. 31,   Influence  /  Attraction

"Influence. Success.
Perseverance furthers.
To take a maiden to wife brings good fortune."

A future of Influence awaits "the superior man [who] encourages people to approach him by his readiness to receive them." [The Image]

This openness is the opposite of the situation described yesterday, in our only changing line from the main message, Gathering Together.  That line warned of the difficulties in trying to gain admission into a closed circle.

Openness, on the other hand, "attracts others to you and creates an atmosphere for the exchange of ideas." [Wing]

This Attraction or Influence will be positive.  "The laws of nature are reflected in the great benefits that occur from the mutual attraction of apparently opposite forces." [Anthony]  We received this hexagram as a future message on Nov. 2.
Receiving it again, also as a future message, indicates that you need to remain open to an Influence that may seem your very opposite.

"Heaven and earth attract each other and thus all creatures come into being.  Through such attraction the sage [the I Ching] influences men's hearts, and thus the world attains peace." [Wilhelm]

Joining with the object of this Attraction in a serious, long-term commitment will bring good fortune.

Get away from the sighers, hand-wringers and complainers

No. 45.   Gathering Together / Bringing Together, Line 3:

"Gathering Together amid sighs.
Nothing that would further.
Going is without blame.
Slight humiliation."

"Often a man feels an urge to unite with others, but the individuals around him have already formed themselves into a group, so that he remains isolated.  The whole situation proves untenable." [Wilhelm]

The traditional translations of the commentaries to this line advise you to ally yourself "with a man who stands nearer to the center of the group" and rely on that person to help you "gain admission to the closed circle," even if that is "somewhat humiliating." [Wilhelm]

But is that what the words say?  It seems to me that it says, rather, that there is "nothing that would further" in being a part of a group of sighers, hand-wringers and complainers.   Leaving is without blame, even though it may involve some slight humiliation.

Confucius's commentary says, "Going forward, no fault."  Set your sights on the future, which involves . . .

The I Ching says " . . . our actions will accord with the will of heaven."

No. 45.   Gathering Together / Bringing Together:

"Gathering Together. Success.
The king approaches his temple.
It furthers one to see the great man.
This brings success. Perseverance furthers.
To bring great offerings creates good fortune.
It furthers one to undertake something."

Gathering Together, or as Huang translates it, Bringing Together will have success.

This hexagram "symbolizes a large community, such as a nation" and "implies a purposeful togetherness." [Huang]

"This assemblage can be a reunion of people with a common heritage, such as a family or religious congregation, or an artificial structure such as society, business, or politics." [Wing]

Like the Occupy Wall Street movement, perhaps?  (See yesterday's Daily Yi.)  "The last two sentences of the Text imply that our actions will accord with the will of heaven." [Blofeld]

Or it may be that you, personally and internally, need to "get it together."

"When you are not in accord with your goals, you may well feel indecision, conflict, or malaise; when you are, a sense of confidence and well-being will surround you." [Wing]

To assure good fortune, Huang's translation says, "Use big animals."   Wilhelm says " . . . bring great offerings."

However you translate it, and whatever the goal, the Yi says: Give it everything you've got.

The Yi Joins the Occupy Wall Street Movement

No. 7,
  The Army / Collective Force:

"The Army.  The army needs perseverance
And a strong man.
Good fortune without blame."

In the future of Conflict, your goals must be higher goals; goals that benefit your entire society. To reach them, you will need the "energy of mass support."  [Wing]

The Image of The Army says, "Thus the superior man increases his masses by generosity toward the people."

This "energy of mass support" is, I believe,  the driving force behind the Occupy Wall Street movement.  As Wilhelm explains The Image:

"When danger threatens, every peasant becomes a soldier; when the war ends, he goes back to his plow.  . . . Only a people economically strong can be important in military power. Such power must therefore be cultivated by improving the economic condition of the people and by humane government."

This is important, so forgive the repetition.  The strength and power of a nation only come from:

1. Improving the economic condition of the people; and

2. Humane government.

No. 6,  Conflict,  Line 5:

"To contend before him
Brings supreme good fortune."

This line suggests bringing your Conflict before a "powerful and just authority.  If you are in the right, the situation will end in good fortune and success." [Wing]

The problem here is finding that "powerful and just authority."  Most Conflicts in our daily lives aren't subject to any authority. We can't run to the teacher on the playground.  We have to settle conflicts ourselves.

If it is an inner Conflict, however, you can bring your dilemma before the Yi.  Ask your question, throw the coins, build your own hexagram.  (Go to the "Getting Started with the I Ching" section of our website, http://bookofchanges.org and go to "How do I get a reading?")

The Yi is advising you to settle this Conflict and move on.  Even if you win,  . . .

No. 6,  Conflict,  Line 4:

“One cannot engage in conflict.
One turns back and submits to fate,
Changes one's attitude,
And finds peace in perseverance.
Good fortune."

The Conflict that consumes you may be an inner Conflict --- your inability to choose a course of action. Or maybe you can't accept a situation for what it is --- you're constantly wanting more, or something different.

Or you sense a weakness in an external opponent, and want to push ahead in the battle because you think you can win.

The person in this situation "cannot carry on the fight, because, since right is not on his side, he cannot justify the conflict to his conscience." [Wilhelm]

If, however, you can let it go, accept "what is,"  and change your attitude, you will find peace and good fortune.

There is another possible way to end this conflict  .  .  .

No. 6,  Conflict:

“Conflict. You are sincere
And are being obstructed.
A cautious halt halfway brings good fortune.
Going through to the end  brings misfortune.
It furthers one to see the great man.
It does not further one to cross the great water."

A Conflict is putting your life on hold.

You are not at fault in this Conflict; the Yi makes that clear.  However, being in the right doesn't mean that you will "win."

You are advised to seek the middle ground, to find some compromise.  Pushing to defeat this opposition totally will bring misfortune.

The classic example of this would be a divorce.  Couples will fight over who gets the dish drainer.  The fact that you should get the dish drainer --- after all, you bought it and it matches your teapot --- is meaningless.  Look for a compromise; try mediation.

The Yi senses you are going to have a hard time letting go of this Conflict, and has offered three lines of advice, Lines 4, 5 and 6.

No. 31,   Influence  /  Attraction

"Influence. Success.
Perseverance furthers.
To take a maiden to wife brings good fortune."

Have you Nourished yourself as the Yi advised?  Then you will be ready for a future of Influence.

The Image says,  "Thus the superior man encourages people to approach him by his readiness to receive them."  This openness "attracts others to you and creates an atmosphere for the exchange of ideas." [Wing]

This Attraction or Influence will be positive.  "The laws of nature are reflected in the great benefits that occur from the mutual attraction of apparently opposite forces." [Anthony]

Joining with the object of this Attraction in a serious, long-term commitment will bring good fortune.

No. 27.  Nourishing, Line 6:

"The source of nourishment.
Awareness of danger brings good fortune.
It furthers one to cross the great water."

In the final stage of this situation, you will reach "the source of nourishment."    You will understand what needs to be done, and will have the inner resources to do it.

Proceeding will not be without danger.  "Nourishment gives rise both to trouble and good fortune." [Blofeld]

But if you remain conscious of this fact, you will have "good fortune and may confidently undertake even great and difficult labors, such as crossing the great water.  These undertakings bring general happiness  . . ."  [Wilhelm]

      It will lead to  . . .

Tomorrow:   "Influence. Success."

What is the I Ching?

The I Ching, also known as the Yi Jing, or (in English) Book of Changes, is an oracle; a divination device that forms a pattern reflecting the forces at work in the Universe at a particular point in time.

The symbol you see above is the bagua, the symbol of the I Ching for thousands of years before it was "adopted" as the octagonal logo of the Dharma Iniative in the television series "Lost."

This pattern, when viewed in the context of a concern or question, sends a message of timeless advice and insight.

Richard Wilhelm explained it this way in a footnote to his translation of Ta Chaun - The Great Treatise:

"The way in which the Book of Changes works can best be compared to an electrical circuit reaching into all situations.

"The circuit only affords the potentiality of lighting:  it does not give light.

"But when contact with a definite situation is established, the 'current' is activated, and the given situation is illumined."

Plug yourself in.

-------------------------------

The great Swiss pyschiatrist C.G. Jung, who was a serious student of the I Ching, said:

"The I Ching does not offer itself with proofs and results; it does not vaunt itself, nor is it easy to approach. Like a part of nature, it waits until it is discovered.

"It offers neither facts nor power, but for lovers of self-knowledge, of wisdom - if there be such - it seems to be the right book.  . . .

"He who is not pleased by it does not have to use it, and he who is against it is not obliged to find it true.

"Let it go forth into the world for the benefit of those who can discern its meaning."
