No. 27,  Nourishing,   Line 5:

"Turning away from the path.
To remain persevering brings good fortune.
One should not cross the great water."

You will reach a time when the responsibility for nourishing others will simply be too much for you to handle.

Two possibilities present themselves.  One is that you lack sufficient strength to continue in this role without assistance.  If that is the case, now is the time to ask for help and "depend on a strong superior to accomplish the deed."  [Wing]

Or it may be, as Anthony and Moog suggest, you are taking too much responsibility for someone else.  Are you trying to do things for someone that he should be doing for himself?

Either way, you need to stop and take a rest.  Now is not the time to "attempt great labors."  Step off the path --- or the treadmill --- without abandoning your larger purpose.   You will still be on your way "up" to . . .

Tomorrow:  "The source of nourishment."

No. 27,  Nourishing,  Line 4:

"Turning to the summit
For the provision of nourishment
Brings good fortune.
Spying about with sharp eyes
Like a tiger with insatiable craving.
No blame."

When you turn to higher things for the provision of your nourishment, good fortune will ensue.

Line 1 warned against envy, Line 3 warned of the stubborn pursuit of the frivolous or empty. When your motives turn from the selfish to the greater good, however, success becomes possible.

In pursuit of this higher purpose, you may become like the tiger:  constantly on the lookout,  and ready to pounce, on anyone or anything that will further your plan.

Since you are working not for yourself, "but for the good of all, there is no wrong in such zeal."  [Wilhelm]

You will need all the focus you can muster  . . .

Tomorrow:  "Turning away from the path."

No. 27,  Nourishing,  Line 3:

"Turning away from nourishment.
Perseverance brings misfortune.
Do not act thus for ten years.
Nothing serves to further."

"He is determined to relinquish nourishment --- misfortune! For ten years he performs no useful function  . . ." [Blofeld]

This line describes the person who knows what she should be doing, but stubbornly persists in pursuits that are frivolous, and even downright harmful.

Be honest:  Are you trying to fill yourself up with the "donuts" of life, instead of the whole-grain muffins?   You long for a meaningful and lasting relationship, but are you "looking for love in all the wrong places?"

The Yi reminds you:  You can keep this up as long as you like --- but it won't get you where you want to go.

Or as motivational speaker Les Brown likes to say, "If you want to keep getting what you're getting --- keep on doing what you're doing."

But if you want a better way to get your "nourishment," one that "brings good fortune" and "no blame"  . . .

Tomorrow:  "Turning to the summit . . . ."

No. 27,  Nourishing,  Line 1:

"You let your magic tortoise go,
And look at me with the corners of your mouth drooping.
Misfortune."

You have everything you truly need, but you look at others and want more.

In ancient China, the "magic tortoise" was a creature that lived on air and needed no earthly nourishment.  It is also symbolic of the Cosmos, the whole of the Universe.

"The image means that a man fitted by nature and position to live freely and independently renounces this self-reliance and instead looks with envy and discontent at others who are outwardly in better circumstances."  [Wilhelm]

The Yi is telling you:  The greatest threat to your happiness is not realizing what you've got.  But being envious is only part of the problem, as we will see in Line 3 . . .

No. 27,  The Corners of the Mouth  /  Providing Nourishment:

"The Corners of the Mouth.
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Pay heed to the providing of nourishment
And to what a man seeks
To fill his own mouth with."

The Yi says:  Pay attention to what you put in your mouth --- and in your mind.

"This hexagram denotes a time when you must pay close attention to what you do and say. Look on your words and actions as a form of food to those around you.  If you are negative, this will have a negative effect --- both on yourself and others."  [Marshall]

Keeping a food diary can help you get started on a more nutritious diet.  It's a lot harder keeping track of what you put in your mind.   Sure, you can identify the empty calories in watching Dancing with the Stars (Okay, so Chaz won't ever be a professional dancer. He gave it his best shot.)

But what about your own negative, self-defeating thoughts?  What and how we think is part of what we "feed" our mind.

See if you can keep a diary, just for a day, of what you put in your mind.  We'll be working on this concept of Nourishment for awhile --- we received five changing lines, all but No. 2.

No. 43,   Breakthrough  /  Resoluteness:

"Break-through. One must resolutely make the matter known
At the court of the king.
It must be announced truthfully.  Danger.
It is necessary to notify one's own city.
It does not further to resort to arms.
It furthers one to undertake something."

"The arrival of this hexagram indicates that a long-awaited change is at hand.  A difficulty that has oppressed you over a long period is now about to dissolve.  It is important to respond in the proper way."  [Brian Browne Walker]

This is the future of The Creative.
A new situation is developing. To obtain the benefit of it, you must act appropriately.

Make a clear declaration of your intentions, but do not argue or defend your position.  There is always an element of danger involved in telling people what they don't want to hear.  If your new path involves doing less for others and more for yourself, you may run into some stiff opposition --- or a lot of whining and complaining.

Proceed "calmly, cheerfully, and with authority" and with "inner truth and resolve that do not know defeat."  [Wing]

No. 1,  The Creative, Line 6 :

"Arrogant dragon will have cause to repent."

"This line warns against titanic aspirations that exceed one's power." [Wilhelm]

Yes, The Creative power of the universe is with you.  But . . . do not focus your ambitions solely on your own personal advancement. Your disregard of the greater good will be your downfall.

Anthony and Moog suggest that this may come in the form of an illness.   This illness need not last forever.  If you see where you went wrong, and change your ways, the future holds a . . .

Tomorrow:  "Breakthrough."

No. 1,  The Creative:

"The Creative works sublime success,
Furthering through perseverance."

"The time is exceptional in terms of inspiration, energy and will. . . .   The force of this time is the primal directive that propels us into our destinies, regardless of what our reasoning or recalcitrant minds may think." [R.L. Wing]

Perhaps you read, but did not believe, yesterday's future message:  "If you have been waiting for an opportune moment to put forth a new idea or to maneuver yourself into a better position, the time has come. "  [Wing]

Well, believe it!  Receiving The Creative means that this favorable time will continue, as long as you "use this time wisely and do not squander the extraordinary Creative Power available to you on undirected activities.  Everything you do will now lead you to still greater goals, so you should carefully conserve and direct your resources." [Wing]

"The purpose of the I Ching is not to expose the nature of the celestial bodies or the divine deities but to offer guidance for favorable action in one's daily life and at the same time to avoid misconduct that invites misfortune." [Huang]

"Because he sees with great clarity causes and effects, he completes the six steps at the right time and mounts toward heaven on them at the right time, as though on six dragons."  [Wilhelm]

But watch out for that sixth dragon . . .

Tomorrow: "Arrogant dragon will have cause to repent."

No. 19,   Approach / Growth:

 "Approach has supreme success.
Perseverance furthers.
When the eighth month comes,
There will be misfortune."

"If you have been waiting for an opportune moment to put forth a new idea or to maneuver yourself into a better position, the time has come. "  [Wing]

We received this hexagram as the main message on Oct. 10.  It comes again as the future of Abundance to remind you:  You need to accumulate the benefits of this auspicious time to sustain you when the inevitable downswing comes again.  As this main message said:  "Be not sad. Be like the sun at midday."

In the time of Approach, The Image informs us, " . . . the superior man is inexhaustible in his will to teach, and without limits in his tolerance and protection of the people."

You have something important to share.  Use this "inexhaustible will" to shine your light as far as it will reach.

No. 55,  Abundance,   Line 4:

"The curtain is of such fullness
That the polestars can be seen at noon.
He meets his ruler, who is of like kind.
Good fortune."

"Here the darkness is already decreasing, therefore interrelated elements come together." [Wilhelm]

Blofeld translates this as "meeting a prince of equal rank --- good fortune!"

In other words, you will meet someone who shares your interests, beliefs and virtues. A relationship that is truly fulfilling will be the Abundance promised in the main message.

The Yi says: Do not let the darkness of the current moment blind you to light that exists.

This relationship may have you in the leading role, sharing your insights with others, as we will see in our future reading  . . .

Tomorrow:  "Thus the superior man is inexhaustible in his will to teach  . . ."

No. 55,  Abundance,   Line 3:

"The underbrush is of such abundance
That the small stars can be seen at noon.
He breaks his right arm.  No blame."

The underbrush of Line 3 may be your own mistaken ideas about what must, or should, be done. Or, it may be the incompetence of others.  Wing says, "Incompetence is at its zenith.  Be patient."

     Whatever the cause
, your Abundance, the light - or clarity - in the situation will seem totally blocked.  As The Stranger said in The Big Lebowski, things will be "darker than a black steer's tookus on a moonless prairie night."

You will lose someone on whom you depend heavily --- your "right hand" man.  This will not be the result of something you have done; therefore, there is no blame.

The darkness will begin to lift when you meet someone  . . .

Tomorrow: " . . . who is of like kind."

No. 55,  Abundance,   Line 2:

"The curtain is of such fullness
That the polestars can be seen at noon.
Through going one meets with mistrust and hate.
If he rouses him through truth,
Good fortune comes."

Abundance --- over sufficient quantity or supply --- is not always a good thing.  It depends on what you have an Abundance of.

Here, "One's intelligence is overshadowed by another's ignorance." [Huang]  And not just "overshadowed" --- pretty much blocked out entirely.

Attempts to achieve something positive under these conditions are subverted by "plots and party intrigues." [Wilhelm]  At work, this is known as office politics.  In social situations, you are dealing with "frenemies" --- enemies disguised as friends.

The Yi advises you to "hold inwardly to the power of truth."   Your only hope of exerting influence is to remain honest and open and focused on the positive.  You will not change anyone immediately  . . .

Tomorrow:  "He breaks his right arm."

No. 55,  Abundance:

"Abundance has success.
The king attains abundance.
Be not sad.
Be like the sun at midday."

Things are on their way up - in fact, they will reach their zenith, "like the sun at midday."

This time will be "as good as it gets."  Hexagram 55 combines Thunder, the symbol of energy, over Li, the symbol of fire and light, or clarity.  "The inherent message of this hexagram is to make hay while the sun shines and enjoy your good fortune while it lasts."  [Marshall]

The best way to do that, the Yi cautions, is to remain mindful of the transitory nature of all things.

As the great sage of Texas, singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen, says in the liner notes to his album Ready for Confetti "It doesn't matter if you are cosmically connected or have your head in the sand, the world changes whether you are ready or not."

You must work your way through a lot of darkness before you "attain abundance."  We received three changing lines, lines 2, 3 and 4, which explain the different types of darkness you will encounter, and how to deal with each of them.

Tomorrow:  " . . . plots and party intrigues . . ."

No. 29,   Flowing Water  /  Danger /  The Abysmal:

"Flowing Water repeated.
If you are sincere, you have success in your heart,
And whatever you do succeeds."

The future of Preponderance of the Great is:  Danger.

Traditionally, this hexagram is called The Abysmal, or The Abyss, putting the emphasis on the Danger inherent in the current situation.

I call it Flowing Water, because the
message, taken as a whole, says:  You can --- and will --- survive the difficulties that lie ahead.

I think of this as the w
hitewater rafting hexagram:  Flowing water at the bottom of an Abyss, or canyon.  It is dangerous . . .  but it is also thrilling and exhilarating.

     My
husband, a whitewater rafting guide, tells me, "Your job is to hold on and stay in the boat."

Much like the Yi's advice to you:  Be sincere, hold on
, and "whatever you do succeeds."

No. 28,   Preponderance of the Great  /  Excess,  Line 4:

"The ridgepole is braced.  Good fortune.
If there are ulterior motives, it is humiliating."

By being strong and correct, you will gain the support you need.  You are still the one "holding everything together," but you have some help.

But don't depend on others too much.  The key to finding "good fortune" in this stressful situation is being strong for an endeavor that benefits all.

If you have a hidden agenda, or use the bracing you have been given for your own personal gain, it won't work.  In the end, you will be humiliated.

You will need both your own inner strength, and the assistance of others, because the future holds  . . .

Tomorrow:  "Danger."

No. 28,   Preponderance of the Great  /  Excess,  Line 3:

"The ridgepole sags to the breaking point.
Misfortune."

There is as much "weight" on the situation as it can bear.  This "weight" is stressing you out.

Stress takes a lot of different forms.  What is your biggest stressor, right now?

In the interpersonal realm, it may come from "false duties and expectations that have been superimposed upon the relationship  . . ." [Anthony & Moog]   Are you taking on a responsibility to make something "right?"  Are you trying to make everyone "happy?"

Or it might actually be your weight --- you may have put on enough pounds that it is negatively impacting your overall health.

Whatever it is, this line comes to warn you:   If you "push ahead" and "accept no advice from others,"  no one will support you.

"Because of this the burden grows, until the structure of things bends or breaks.  Plunging willfully ahead in times of danger only hastens the catastrophe." [Wilhelm]

But it doesn't have to be this way . . .

Tomorrow:  "The ridgepole is braced.  Good fortune."

No. 28,   Preponderance of the Great  /  Excess:

"Preponderance of the Great.
The ridgepole sags to the breaking point.
It furthers one to have somewhere to go.
Success."

"The pressures of the moment are enormous, and there is a temptation to flee  . . ."   [Walker]

Do you feel like you're carrying the weight of the world --- or at least the whole "house" --- on your shoulders?  You may be right!

Or perhaps this message is aimed at the Occupy Wall Street movement:

"It is an exceptional time and situation; therefore extraordinary measures are demanded.  It is necessary to find a way to transition as quickly as possible, and to take action.  This promises success. For although the strong element is in excess, it is in the middle, that is, at the center of gravity, so that a revolution is not to be feared.

"Nothing is to be achieved by forcible measures.  The problem must be solved by gentle penetration to the meaning of the situation;  . . . then the change-over to other conditions will be successful.

"It demands real superiority; therefore the time when the great preponderates is a momentous time."  [Wilhelm]

This weight will not lift anytime soon  . . .

Tomorrow:  "Because of this the burden grows  . . ."

No. 35,  Progress:

"Progress. The powerful prince
Is honored with horses in large numbers.
In a single day he is granted audience three times."

The future of Enthusiasm/Confidence is Progress.

The two components of this hexagram symbolize the sun rising over the earth.  "The sun appears to grow brighter as it moves away from the darkness.  The same is true of us:  the extent to which we progress is determined by how far we distance ourselves from inferior influences." [Walker]

This "darkness" or "inferior influence" is likely the subject of our "deluded enthusiasm," warned about in yesterday's changing line.  Remember, there is "no blame" as long as you "Make a change; proceed." [Huang]

Indeed, you will be rewarded --- both materially, and with attention paid to what you have to say.

No. 16,   Enthusiasm  /  Confidence,  Line 6:

But if after completion one changes,
There is no blame."

Receiving only this last changing line suggests that you may throw yourself with Enthusiasm and Confidence into a position or relationship that will turn out to be a dead end.

Huang shares with us the Chinese adage, "Extreme joy begets sorrow."  If, however, you look at this situation honestly and learn the lesson, there is "no blame."

"The person in this position is lost in the memory of a compelling and harmonious experience.  The time is past  . . . Fortunately, reform is possible."  [Wing]

No. 16,   Enthusiasm  /  Confidence:

"Enthusiasm. It furthers one to install helpers
And to set armies marching."

Blofeld calls this hexagram Repose, by which he means "the kind of mental repose which follows absolute confidence that the action being taken is the right one."

You can "set armies marching" now, knowing that the direction you have chosen is the right one.

"Recognizing where our true help comes from and how readily it is granted inspires us with the inner independence needed to find the right direction for our lives.  This is true Enthusiasm."  [Anthony & Moog]

Receiving this message is a natural continuation of the direction pointed to in the past two messages, Approach/Growth and Pushing Upward.

Do you know the direction you want your life to take?  The Yi is shouting:  Go for it!

This hexagram came with but one word of caution  . . .

No. 46,  Pushing Upward:

"Pushing upward has supreme success.
One must see the great man.
Fear not.
Departure toward the south
Brings good fortune."

The future of Approach/GrowthSuccess is assured --- if one exerts the appropriate effort.

"Growing gradually keeps the tree strong, firm, and stable.  This is the wisdom of nature.  Weeds grow quickly --- they are neither strong nor stable." [Huang]

Don't be afraid to consult someone about your proposed path.  "It is essential to see a great man, so as to banish anxiety." [Blofeld]  Setting the activity in motion (the departure toward the south) almost guarantees good fortune.

     The person  "receiving this hexagram is counseled to make a decision between two paths. . . .the path of his unique destiny that he alone can trod by following his inner truth, or the one laid out  . . .that has been trodden by others."  [Anthony and Moog}

It may be that, because things are going well, you feel that not much attention or effort is necessary.

Or it may be, as Blofeld suggests, you feel "there is nowhere towards which it would be advantageous to set out."  You see your desired destination being blocked by factors over which you have no control.  Or your chosen goal is, quite frankly, just not that desirable.

Letting yourself float along in this fashion leads you nowhere.

"This gua (hexagram) is absolutely auspicious."  [Huang]

Steve Jobs
1955-2011

In his college years, Steve Jobs was a serious student of the I Ching:

"After a single semester at Reed College in Portland, he dropped out of school, then spent the following year learning the I Ching -- a Chinese system of symbols used to find order in chance events -- while dropping acid and dropping in on Reed's philosophy classes."  [Contra Costa Times article on Steve Jobs]

This quote from his 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University has appeared on countless newscasts here in the U.S., but it bears repeating again:

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.  Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking.  Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.   And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.  They somehow already know what you truly want to become.  Everything else is secondary."

Sounds like something the Yi would say, doesn't it?   Maybe it was.

No. 20. Contemplation:

"Contemplation. The ablution has been made,
But not yet the offering.
Full of trust they look up to him."

We received Contemplation as a future message on Oct. 1, and here it is again.  The Yi is saying:  Give your current situation some serious, unhurried thought.

This is the future of Return/The Turning Point, a message we received three times in less than a month.

"When attempting to determine the meaning and tendency of a situation at this time, approach it with the predictable plan of the seasons in mind.   . . .  by taking note of what immediately preceded it, you should be able to determine what will follow."  [Wing]

This Turning Point is positive :  "There is movement toward the light,  . . . arising spontaneously, the old is discarded and the new introduced . . .." [Wilhelm]

This hexagram also contains the concept of Setting An Example.  "The power of influencing others is directly diminished by doubt.  The more inwardly firm we are in following our path, the more outward influence we will have on others."  [Anthony]

Be strong --- not fast --- in moving in your new direction.

Misfortune from within and without.
If armies are set marching in this way,
One will in the end suffer a great defeat,
Disastrous for the ruler of the country
For ten years
It will not be possible to attack again."

If you "miss the return,"  what will happen?

Hmmmm, let's see:  "Misfortune."   "Misfortune from within and without."   " . . . a great defeat."   "Disastrous."

Do you think the Yi is trying to tell us something?

"The message of this line is that at the turning point --- if one obstinately sticks to the wrong course and refuses to turn back --- there will surely be danger." [Huang]

The Yi has been sending messages about this Turning Point for a month now.  Greeted properly, it leads to success.  Ignore it, and it will be a long time before you can get back on track.

"Because the error is at an initial stage, it is not yet serious.  If one knows how to amend one's mistakes at the very beginning, it is not too difficult to make a fresh start." [Huang]

A wise supervisor I once worked with used to tell her staff, "Just because I made a mistake doesn't mean I have to keep making it."

So you made a mistakeYou don't have to keep making it.  There is "great good fortune" --- a true Turning Point for you --- in correcting your trajectory in time.  It will lead to  . . .

Tomorrow:  "Noblehearted return."

No. 24,  Return  /  The Turning Point:

"Return.  Success.
Going out and coming in without error.
Friends come without blame.
To and fro goes the way.
On the seventh day comes return.
It furthers one to have somewhere to go."

"Receiving this hexagram is a sign that you have reached a turning point."  [Walker]

This is the third time we have received this hexagram in less than a month.  It first appeared as a future message on Sept. 12, then as the main message with one changing line on Sept. 18, and today as the main message, with three changing lines.  Perhaps the "seventh day" is here.

"The problem that concerns you has reached its lowest point."  [Marshall]

"There is movement toward the light, but it is not brought about by force.  The movement is natural, arising spontaneously, the old is discarded and the new introduced; both measures accord with the time; therefore no harm results." [Wilhelm]

In your "movement toward the light," don't get off on the wrong foot  . . .

Tomorrow: "Return from a short distance."

No. 20. Contemplation:

"Contemplation. The ablution has been made,
But not yet the offering.
Full of trust they look up to him."

Have you come to a realization about a relationship?  Have you analyzed your Union, who you are Holding Together with, using the advice in the main message and changing line?  That is the beginning - the ablution, or cleansing.

Making the offering -  real changes - can wait until you have deepened your understanding.  The Yi's advice for the future is a period of Contemplation.

"A fundamental fact of consciousness is that we take on the attributes and energy of that upon which we focus our attention." [Walker]  So it is important that you focus on the whole of the situation, including the possibilities for the future, and not just the circumstances of the past.

But just because you are still in a period of Contemplation doesn't mean you need to wait to more openly live your real values. The more honest you are about what you truly want,  the more influence you will have on others.

What is the I Ching?

The I Ching, also known as the Yi Jing, or (in English) Book of Changes, is an oracle; a divination device that forms a pattern reflecting the forces at work in the Universe at a particular point in time.

The symbol you see above is the bagua, the symbol of the I Ching for thousands of years before it was "adopted" as the octagonal logo of the Dharma Iniative in the television series "Lost."

This pattern, when viewed in the context of a concern or question, sends a message of timeless advice and insight.

Richard Wilhelm explained it this way in a footnote to his translation of Ta Chaun - The Great Treatise:

"The way in which the Book of Changes works can best be compared to an electrical circuit reaching into all situations.

"The circuit only affords the potentiality of lighting:  it does not give light.

"But when contact with a definite situation is established, the 'current' is activated, and the given situation is illumined."

Plug yourself in.

-------------------------------

The great Swiss pyschiatrist C.G. Jung, who was a serious student of the I Ching, said:

"The I Ching does not offer itself with proofs and results; it does not vaunt itself, nor is it easy to approach. Like a part of nature, it waits until it is discovered.

"It offers neither facts nor power, but for lovers of self-knowledge, of wisdom - if there be such - it seems to be the right book.  . . .

"He who is not pleased by it does not have to use it, and he who is against it is not obliged to find it true.

"Let it go forth into the world for the benefit of those who can discern its meaning."
