No. 22,  Grace,  Line 5:

"Grace in hills and mountains.
The roll of silk is meager and small.
Humiliation, but in the end good fortune."

The main hexagram said:  Now is the time to use your unique gifts.   Grace denotes natural beauty, the natural form and function of things --- including you.

Line 5 suggests that you are trying to offer something manufactured --- the "roll of silk" --- but because you are not rich in material things, it is "meager and small."   You feel your gift is "not good enough."

The Yi says:  You're wrong.  The offering of your natural self is what really matters.  "Your worth will be recognized and you will meet with good fortune."  [Wing]

No. 22,  Grace:

"Grace has success.
In small matters
It is favorable to undertake something."

"Each individual comes with unique gifts that demand expression during his life."  [Anthony & Moog]

This hexagram comes to tell you:  Now is the time to use your unique gifts.  But don't try to take on a huge project all at once.  This will be a step-by-step process.

The Image of Grace is a "Fire at the foot of the mountain; . . .  Thus does the superior man proceed when clearing up current affairs.  But he dare not decide controversial issues in this way."  Right now, you can see clearly only a small portion of the whole "mountain."

Blofeld explains:  "From the point of view of divination, it would seem that this is a time to watch carefully so as to learn how those involved in the situation think and behave  . . ."

The way forward may be a puzzle, to which you hold --- right now --- only one piece  . . .

No. 45.   Gathering Together / Bringing Together:

"Gathering Together. Success.
The king approaches his temple.
It furthers one to see the great man.
This brings success. Perseverance furthers.
To bring great offerings creates good fortune.
It furthers one to undertake something."

The future of Holding Together favors Gathering Together, or as Huang translates it, Bringing Together --- implying a "purposeful togetherness."

"This assemblage can be a reunion of people with a common heritage, such as a family or religious congregation, or an artificial structure such as society, business, or politics." [Wing]

But most importantly, it should be a new group --- not the "wrong people" you are Holding Together with now (yesterday's changing line).

Or it may be that you, personally and internally, need to "get it together."

"When you are not in accord with your goals, you may well feel indecision, conflict, or malaise; when you are, a sense of confidence and well-being will surround you." [Wing]

Huang's translation says, "Use big animals."   Wilhelm says " . . . bring great offerings."

However you translate it, and whatever your goal, the Yi says: The time is coming to give it everything you've got.

No. Union  /  Holding Together,  Line 3:

"You hold together with the wrong people."

Been having trouble discerning exactly what the Yi is trying to tell you?   Then Line 3 should be a welcome break.

Our only changing line is short, sweet and to the point:  "You hold together with the wrong people."

Are you trying to hold everyone together in your family, at your workplace, or with your group of friends?  The Yi says, "The people in the environment of your inquiry are not right for you at this time."  [Wing]

How do you know they're not right?  "This is obvious when the ego in one person is constantly in control."  [Anthony & Moog]

You know who this person is.  Separate yourself.  The future holds success in a different  . . .

Tomorrow:  "Gathering Together."

No. Union  /  Holding Together:

"Seeking union.
Good fortune.
Examine the divination:
Sublimely persevering, steadfast and upright.
No fault.
Restless factions just coming.
Lagging behind: misfortune."

The essence of the message:  Seeking union with others brings good fortune.  As R.L. Wing points out, "The individual human spirit is nourished by a sense of connectedness to the whole of human awareness."

The Yi directs us to "examine the divination."   Are you prepared to take a leadership role?  If you are, "no fault."

If you are not, don't volunteer,  "for anyone attempting the task without a real calling for it only makes confusion worse than if no union at all had taken place."  [Wilhelm]

Do not hesitate too long.  "Restless factions" are just now entering the picture.  If you lag behind, you will meet with misfortune.

The Yi sent but one changing line,  Line 3, and it's important . . .

Tomorrow:  "You hold together with the wrong people."

No. 64,   Before Completion:

Before Completion. Success.
But if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing,
Gets his tail in the water.
There is nothing that would further."

Yesterday's final changing line said, " . . the turning point is at hand. . . .  If she moves forward, good fortune will follow."  [Huang].

And today's future reading says, "You need to move carefully --- like a little fox crossing an ice-covered river."  But you do need to keep moving.

This is the last hexagram in the I Ching, but it does not signal an end.   It describes "the condition before transition."  [The Image]

". . . it  could suggest that you are not prepared to see clearly what must be done and take the final steps into the future. This may be a fear of the emptiness that sometimes comes after achieving a goal, or, on a more primal level, a fear of death.  . . .  All aspects of life and human affairs must come to an end and begin anew.  The awareness and acceptance of this is the richness of the human experience."  [Wing]

No. 47,  Oppression  /  Exhaustion,  Line 6:

"He is oppressed by creeping vines.
He moves uncertainly and says,  "Movement brings remorse."
If one feels remorse over this and makes a start,
Good fortune comes."

The creeping vines are back!   You are being held back by bonds that --- like creeping vines --- have taken over slowly and silently.  But they can easily be broken.

"Creeping vines refer to the tentacles of negative thought processes  . . ."   [Anthony & Moog]; or doubts about your ability to follow a new path, or achieve your goal.

Line 5 suggested that this Oppression/Exhaustion/Adversity comes from the actions of others, especially those in authority.
.
In the three times we have received hexagram No. 47, this is the second time we have received Line 6.

This is the Yi emphasizing that   "... the turning point is at hand.  If she truly regrets former faults, her sincerity is auspicious.  If she moves forward, good fortune will follow."  [Huang]

How exactly should you move forward?  "The little fox" is back, to guide us into the future  . . .

Tomorrow:  ". . . deliberation and caution are the prerequisites of success."

No. 47,  Oppression  /  Exhaustion  /  Adversity,  Line 5:

"His nose and feet are cut off.
Oppression at the hands of the man with the purple knee bands.
Joy comes softly.
It furthers one to make offerings and libations."

Adversity is being caused by those above you (symbolized by the nose), and those below you are not being supportive (the feet).

"Oppression at the hands of the man with the purple knee bands"  means someone in a position of authority is holding you back.    "Bureaucracy stands in the way of progress." [Wing]

But things will improve  . . . slowly.   "Remain hopeful and have faith."  [Huang]

We did not receive changing line 5 the last time around.  I believe it is sent to us now to point out that this Oppression/Exhaustion/Adversity is not of your own making. Your Exhaustion comes from dealing with the actions of others.

We had put too much emphasis on the inner struggle --- doubt, and the "tentacles of negative thought."

How you deal with this Oppression is, however, still your responsibility.  We also received line 6,  a reminder that these Oppressive bonds can easily be broken . . .

Tomorrow:  "He is oppressed by creeping vines."

No. 47.  Oppression  /  Exhaustion  /  Adversity:

"Adversity leading to success thanks to persistence in a righteous course;
Good fortune for the truly great and freedom from error!
Though words be spoken,
They will not inspire confidence."

This is getting spooky.   We have received hexagram 47 three times in the past 10 days.

Receiving the same hexagram over and over, especially in a short period of time, means either you are not paying attention to what the Yi is trying to tell you; or you need to look at the message in another way.

So today I changed from the Wilhelm translation to Blofeld, to give us a slightly different perspective, and include Blofeld's commentary on the text:

"The adversity is caused by something which lies hidden.  Danger and joy are conjoined.  He who attains success in spite of difficulty is indeed a Superior Man (and thus one of the truly great).  That righteous persistence will bring good fortune to such a man is indicated by the firm line in the middle (of the upper trigram).  Since what is said will not be believed, it would be a waste of effort to talk."

Anthony and Moog explain this last point as the mistaken idea that one must "defend and justify one's inner truth in words."  Are you exhausting yourself trying to get someone to see things your way?  Constantly explaining to others why you are doing what you're doing?  The Yi says, "Give it up.  Your truth needs no defense."

Does this speak to you in a way our previous discussions of this hexagram have not?  I hope so.  Perhaps the two changing lines will provide the needed assistance . . .

Tomorrow:  "Oppression at the hands of the man with the purple knee bands."

No. 9, The Taming Power of the Small  /  Restraint:

"The Taming Power of the Small
Has success.
Dense clouds, no rain from our western region."

In the future of Oppression/Exhaustion, as you "move forward," start regaining your power with small steps.

There is a restraining force at work that will not allow a great leap forward.  Perhaps it is the remnants of yesterday's "creeping vines" --- those "tentacles of negative thought."

"Quell any impulses to take aggressive measures.   . . .It is going to take great skillfulness to achieve a successful outcome in personal relationships.  . . . arguments or ultimatums can accomplish nothing.  Your choice is either to acquiesce and wait out the restrained atmosphere in a friendly manner, or to depart from the relationship altogether."  [Wing]

This is not an unfavorable situation.  Potential - like the moisture in the clouds - is there.  Use this time to be prepared to make the most of the "rain" when it does come.

No. 47,  Oppression  /  Exhaustion,  Line 6:

"He is oppressed by creeping vines.
He moves uncertainly and says,  "Movement brings remorse."
If one feels remorse over this and makes a start,
Good fortune comes."

You are being held back by bonds that --- like a creeping vine --- can easily be broken.

"Creeping vines refer to the tentacles of negative thought processes  . . ."   [Anthony & Moog]

You may have turned away from these negative thoughts, but if you hesitate, they will reach out and drag you back down.  An example would be a relationship that has ended. The Yi warns: It's a mistake to think that you could have avoided the pain by maintaining things as they were.

Or these vines may be creeping doubts about your ability to follow a new path, or achieve your goal. Or, they may be the nagging of others:    "You should . . ."      "You can't  . . ."   "Why don't you  . . .?"

This is Line 6, the end of this series of changing lines. Have you recognized yourself in any of the previous lines?

"... [T]he turning point is at hand.  If she truly regrets former faults, her sincerity is auspicious.  If she moves forward, good fortune will follow."  [Huang]

Tomorrow:  "The taming power of the small."

No. 47,  Oppression  /  Exhaustion,  Line 4:

"He comes very quietly, oppressed in a golden carriage.
Humiliation, but the end is reached."

Your feeling of Oppression or Exhaustion may come from having too much good fortune.

Blofeld translates the "coming" as "slow" rather than "quietly" and remarks, "The tardy arrival implies that our will-power is at a low ebb."

You may be depressed because you know that your true path lies in another direction, but you just can't bring yourself to leave your position of comfort and make the move.

The Yi is giving you a heads-up: Don't spend too much time agonizing over it. That "golden carriage" ride is going to end, and y
ou will be humbled anyway.

But . . .  eventually you'll get where you wanted to go.

Tomorrow:  " . . .  oppressed by creeping vines."

Oppression / Exhaustion,  Line 3:

"A man permits himself to be oppressed by stone,
And leans on thorns and thistles.
He enters his house and does not see his wife.
Misfortune."

No wonder you're Exhausted - you are pushing up against a stone wall.  And you have picked the spot where it will hurt the most.

Shelter and support are available to you, but you refuse to see it.

You are, in Confucius's words,  "permitting [yourself] to be oppressed by something that ought not to oppress [you]."  An example of this would be a relationship in which you want a future that the other person simply does not want. You keep pushing, but nothing happens.  And the harder you push, the more it hurts.

Have you identified your "wall" yet?  The Yi says:  It's not going to move.  Focus on the good things you do have, instead of what you don't.

Tomorrow:  ". . . oppressed in a golden carriage."

Monday, July 18, 2011

Oppression  /  Exhaustion,  Line 1:

"One sits oppressed under a bare tree
And strays into a gloomy valley.
For three years one sees nothing."

The cause of your Oppression/Exhaustion is not totally beyond your control.  You have "strayed into" this gloomy valley.

And you will stay there for a long time if you don't take some action.

You are not trapped by external forces.  Remember, "a feeling of despair or depression is a sign that you are holding a false belief." [Walker]  "Such an attitude comes from an inner delusion that he must by all means overcome." [Wilhelm]

You walked into this  -  you can walk out.

Are you unclear about the source of your Oppression? We have three more changing lines to help you identify it.

No. 47, Oppression / Exhaustion:

"Oppression. Success. Perseverance.
The great man brings about good fortune.
No blame.
When one has something to say.
It is not believed."

I love the The Book of Changes!

When I sat down to throw the coins this morning, two thoughts were on my mind: 1. An email conversation I had been having over the difficulties of interpreting and harmonizing the sometimes obscure and seemingly contradictory messages sent by the Yi, specifically, those of the last two days; and 2. I asked directly and specifically for a reading with some changing lines.

The second was a completely selfish request, made strictly because it's easier for me if I have a few days to work through and discuss the complete meaning of a hexagram. (Receiving two hexagrams in a row without changing lines was too much work. Go ahead, say it --- "Ooooh! Poor baby!")

And what did we receive? Oppression/Exhaustion --- the same hexagram we received two days ago that was giving us trouble --- this time, with four changing lines! This is the Yi saying, "You don't get it? Let me spell it out for you."

"We often receive this hexagram when we feel tired. The oppressiveness of doubt exhausts our inner resources. If the situation is not corrected, it may even lead to physical illness." [Anthony]   But  . . the possibility of success is there, if you can identify the doubt that is pulling you down, and get past it.

Changing lines 1, 3, 4 and 6 should help identify the doubt and work through the problem.

Tomorrow: " . . . strays into a gloomy valley."

No. 49,  Revolution  /  Renewal  /  Changing:

“Revolution. On your own day
You are believed.
Supreme success,
Furthering through perseverance
Remorse disappears."

This is one of the most puzzling sequences of hexagrams I have ever seen:  Yesterday's Oppression/Exhaustion, without changing lines, followed immediately by Revolution/Renewal, also without changing lines.

"Without changing lines" means a static situation, one that can be expected to last into the indefinite future. Here, we have "When one has something to say, it is not believed"  followed immediately by "On your own day, you are believed" --- and both presented as unchanging situations.*

Yesterday's Oppression/Exhaustion was "a sign that you are holding a false belief." [Walker]  The message was:  As long as you continue to hold this false belief, you will remain stuck.  Did you identify this "false belief?"

  Here's an exercise to help:
Fill in the blanks:  "I should ____________________."  or  "I can't ________________. "   It is the "shoulds" and "can'ts" that keep playing over and over in your mind that you need to get rid of.

Let go of this false belief and voila!  Revolutionary change and Renewal are possible.  "Supreme success."

................

*Of course, you could adopt the simple explanation that yesterday was just not your day!

No. 47, Oppression / Exhaustion:

"Oppression. Success. Perseverance.
The great man brings about good fortune.
No blame.
When one has something to say.
It is not believed."

"It is an unavoidable time of adversity - a time of oppression and exhaustion. None of us escapes such moments; they are simply part of living." [Brian Browne Walker]

What is this "adversity" - the cause of your oppression and exhaustion? "  A feeling of despair or depression is a sign that you are holding a false belief. Root out and remove this idea or attitude. This will allow the creative to eliminate the oppression." [Walker]

What false belief are you holding? Is it something you believe you should or must do? Or something you believe you can't do?

Arguing with someone --- or yourself --- about this won't get you anywhere. Only "doing what you gotta do" --- actual action --- will keep you on the path until conditions improve.

We received this hexagram without changing lines, meaning there is literally nothing you can do to change this situation. Perseverance in all virtues that make you the "great man" will eventually lead to success.

No. 64,   Before Completion:

Before Completion. Success.
But if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing,

You need to move carefully --- like a little fox crossing an ice-covered river.  But you do need to keep moving.

This hexagram is the last hexagram in the I Ching, but it does not signal an end.   It describes "the condition before transition."  [The Image]  This is the Yi's advice on the future of Youthful Folly/Inexperience/Childhood.

". . . it  could suggest that you are not prepared to see clearly what must be done and take the final steps into the future. No. 4,  Youthful Folly  /  Inexperience  /  Childhood,  Line 4:

"Entangled folly brings humiliation."

       The Yi says:  "Get real."

"For youthful folly it is the most hopeless thing to entangle itself in empty imaginings.  The more obstinately it clings to such unreal fantasies, the more certainly will humiliation overtake it."  [Wilhelm]

You may be  a "child" in the new direction you are taking, but don't buy into the schemes or fantasies of others.  You are meant to be open and willing to learn --- not gullible.

You will need to exercise some caution, as we will see in the future reading tomorrow  . . .

Tomorrow:   "But if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing  . . ."

No. 4,  Youthful Folly  /  Inexperience  /  Childhood:

"Youthful folly has success.
It is not I who seek the young fool;
The young fool seeks me.
At first I inform him.
If he asks two or three times, it is importunity.
If he importunes, I give him no information.
Perseverance furthers."

You are Inexperienced --- as in Childhood --- in the direction you are now taking.    As Blofeld translates it:  "Immaturity.  Good fortune!"

Good fortune, because you are now free to learn as a child would.  You don't know what you're doing, but, hey. . . there's no reason why you should.

This hexagram also advises those new to the I Ching on how best to approach the oracle:  with modesty, respect and an open mind.

Most common problem:  asking repeatedly, because you don't understand the answer, or the answer is not what you want to hear.  The Yi says:  Patience, Grasshopper, patience.

No. 53,  Development  /  Gradual Progress:

"Development.  The maiden
Is given in marriage.
Good fortune.
Perseverance furthers."

Does this message sound familiar?  It should.  We received it on July 1; as the future reading of Influence/Wooing.  Here, we receive it as the future of Fellowship with Others.

If you think the Yi is trying to tell you something, you're right.  The Yi is fairly shouting:  "In relationships, do not rush to the heights."  [Marshall]

"While we often desire rapid progress --- we want to change someone's mind today, achieve all our goals immediately --- sooner or later we must come to understand that the only lasting progress is gradual progress.

"This message comes [again!] to urge you to accept this fact and adjust your attitude and actions accordingly."  [Walker]

No. 13, Fellowship with Others,   Line 4:

"He climbs up on his wall; he cannot attack.

In your Fellowship with Others, some conflict will develop.  There are two opposing forces.  Which side do you join?

The Yi advises a third choice: Stay "above the battle."

" . . . [D]uring a time of seeking harmony, it is not good to take controversial actions."  [Huang]

Your good fortune lies in refraining from the fight.  Let the petty squabbles of others sort themselves out.

No. 13, Fellowship with Others,  Line 1

"Fellowship with men at the gate.
No blame. "

Blofeld translates this line as:  "The beloved is at the gate --- no harm!"

A relationship is beginning. You may feel that you need to be smarter, funnier, thinner, or richer --- whatever --- for this to work.

Or you may feel that certain parts of your life need to be kept secret.

The Yi says:  Meet this person "out in the open."  Secrecy or reservations will bring misfortune.

You will need this strong basic bond, because in any relationship, disagreements will always arise  . . .

Tomorrow:  "He climbs up on his wall; he cannot attack."

No. 13, Fellowship with Others:

"Fellowship with men in the open.
Success.
It furthers one to cross the great water.
The perseverance of the superior man furthers."

Your relationships with others will now take center stage.

The first requirement is that relationships be open and honest.  If you have reservations, or unspoken agendas, your connections to others will not work.

Which relationships is the Yi talking about?  Blofeld translates the title of this hexagram as Lovers, Beloved, Friends, Like-Minded Persons, Universal Brotherhood. That covers pretty much everybody.

     Huang chooses
Seeking Harmony. What role is most natural and comfortable for you?  If you are an alto, trying to be a soprano won't work.

In the song that is life, sing your part, and let others sing theirs. That is where your greatest success will be realized.

Tomorrow:  "Fellowship with men at the gate."

No. 29, Flowing Water / Danger / The Abysmal:

"Flowing Water repeated.
If you are sincere, you have success in your heart,
And whatever you do succeeds."

Traditionally, this hexagram is called The Abysmal, or The Abyss, putting the emphasis on the Danger inherent in rapidly flowing water at the bottom of a "ravine" or canyon.

But the message itself says: You can --- and will --- survive the difficulties that lie ahead.

I think of this as the Whitewater Rafting hexagram. Here where I live, in the Four Corners region of the U.S., whitewater is still going strong. This is unusual for this time of year, but the heavy snows high in the mountains are still melting, and that runoff is still fueling big water.

Like whitewater rafting, the coming time --- the future of Revolution --- will likely be dangerous. But it can also be thrilling and exhilarating.

As my dear husband, a whitewater rafting guide, always tells me, "Your job is to hold on and stay in the boat."

Stay in the boat, be sincere, and "whatever you do succeeds."

No. 49,  Revolution  /  Renewal  /  Changing,  Line 4:

“Remorse disappears.  Men believe him.
Changing the form of government brings good fortune."

Receiving this line indicates that you will "avoid the two mistakes" mentioned in yesterday's changing line; you will act, without undue haste or hesitation.

" 'Changing the form of government brings good fortune' refers to turning the leadership of the personality over to the true self.  The true self understands that to lead means to follow one's inner truth, as each unique moment requires  . . ."  [Anthony and Moog]

Is yours an inner Revolution?  Or a change in structure of your society?  Either way, Line 4 means that you can be confident of your course of action.  Others will follow, leading to "good fortune."

Tomorrow:  ". . . and whatever you do succeeds."

No. 49,  Revolution  /  Renewal  /  Changing,  Line 3:

“Starting brings misfortune.
Perseverance brings danger.
When talk of revolution has gone the rounds three times,
One may commit himself,
And men will believe him."

"When change is necessary, there are two mistakes to be avoided.  One lies in excessive haste . . , the other lies in excessive hesitation."  [Wilhelm]

Which "mistake" is most likely, given your own personal style?  Do you tend to rush into things? Or do you weigh your options until all the options disappear?

Is a new relationship the Revolution you are contemplating?  Take your time before diving in head first.

The Yi suggests you apply a Rule of Three:  If the issue has arisen three times, and you have considered it thoroughly, then you should make your decision and begin your change confidently.

On July 4 here in the U.S. --- our Independence Day --- the Yi says:  Start your own Revolution.

After you have become "firm in your own mind"  (yesterday's changing line) about your new direction, you may begin.

Remember, this Renewal is supposed to be a gradual process.  If you have prepared, taking your first steps brings good fortune.

Are you thinking that your nearest and dearest may not be happy with the "new you?"  Very possibly.  That's one reason this change needs to be gradual. Then there is "no blame."

"It will take time and effort to bring all external elements of your life into accord with this new outlook, but success is definitely assured."  [Wing]

Tomorrow:  ". . . there are two mistakes to be avoided."

No. 49,  Revolution  /  Renewal  /  Changing,  Line 1:

“Wrapped in the hide of a yellow cow."

Line 1 represents "the dawn of a revolution." [Huang]

Changing lines progress, from Line 1 through Line 6, through stages of the situation outlined in the main message.  Here, you are at the very beginning of this process of Renewal.

For the Chinese, yellow is the color of "the middle way" --- no extremes --- and the cow is the symbol of docility.  Meaning:  Don't take any drastic action now. The time is not yet right.

". . . [A]t first the utmost restraint is necessary.  One must become firm in one's mind, control oneself  . . . "  [Wilhelm]  Once you are clear on what you want and how to get there  . . .

Tomorrow:  " . .  one may create revolution."

No. 49,  Revolution  /  Renewal  /  Changing:

“Revolution. On your own day
You are believed.
Supreme success,
Furthering through perseverance
Remorse disappears."

If you've been thinking the time has come to make a major change --- you're right!

Huang calls this hexagram Abolishing the Old.  It has also been called Molting --- a time when you shed your old "coat" for something new.

"The change should be gradual, improvement by improvement, so you may gauge the effect.  Avoid haste and excessive behavior.  This is not a violent revolution, it is a carefully calculated transformation."  [Wing]  This is in keeping with yesterday's future message, which predicted Gradual Progress.

Yes, you will have to leave some things behind.  This is the nature of life.  Eventually, regrets over the past will disappear.

Work needs to be done: your own personal "spring cleaning."   Clear away the old, dead patterns of the past, and allow the new, vigorous growth to appear. The Yi has quite a bit to say about how this process should proceed --- we received changing lines 1 through 4.  Roll up your sleeves . . .

Tomorrow:  "One must become firm in one's mind . . ."

No. 53,  Development  /  Gradual Progress:

"Development.  The maiden
Is given in marriage.
Good fortune.
Perseverance furthers."

In the future of Influence/Wooing, "the maiden is given in marriage," and the Development of commitment begins.

The big message here is:  This will be Gradual Progress.  Whatever is developing, it is going to take time and perseverance.

"While we often desire rapid progress --- we want to change someone's mind today, achieve all our goals immediately --- sooner or later we must come to understand that the only lasting progress is gradual progress.

"This message comes to urge you to accept this fact and adjust your attitude and actions accordingly."  [Walker]

"In relationships, do not rush to the heights.  Let the tree take root and grow steadily stronger."  [Marshall]

What is the I Ching?

The I Ching, also known as the Yi Jing, or (in English) Book of Changes, is an oracle; a divination device that forms a pattern reflecting the forces at work in the Universe at a particular point in time.

The symbol you see above is the bagua, the symbol of the I Ching for thousands of years before it was "adopted" as the octagonal logo of the Dharma Iniative in the television series "Lost."

This pattern, when viewed in the context of a concern or question, sends a message of timeless advice and insight.

Richard Wilhelm explained it this way in a footnote to his translation of Ta Chaun - The Great Treatise:

"The way in which the Book of Changes works can best be compared to an electrical circuit reaching into all situations.

"The circuit only affords the potentiality of lighting:  it does not give light.

"But when contact with a definite situation is established, the 'current' is activated, and the given situation is illumined."

Plug yourself in.

-------------------------------

The great Swiss pyschiatrist C.G. Jung, who was a serious student of the I Ching, said:

"The I Ching does not offer itself with proofs and results; it does not vaunt itself, nor is it easy to approach. Like a part of nature, it waits until it is discovered.

"It offers neither facts nor power, but for lovers of self-knowledge, of wisdom - if there be such - it seems to be the right book.  . . .

"He who is not pleased by it does not have to use it, and he who is against it is not obliged to find it true.

"Let it go forth into the world for the benefit of those who can discern its meaning."
